Medical disclaimer. Nothing here is medical advice. Equipment that fits badly can cause injury or fall risk. Ask a doctor, nurse, or physical or occupational therapist what you need and what size before you borrow or buy.
Affiliate and advertising disclosure (placeholder). This site currently has no affiliate links and no paid placements. If that changes, any page with such links will say so at the top, each link will be labeled, and the required program statement (for example the Amazon Associates statement that we earn from qualifying purchases) will appear. Free programs in the directory are never ranked or hidden because of a commercial relationship.
1. Check wider-area free options first
- Statewide assistive-technology loan programs. New Hampshire: AT4ALL lending library (loans up to 45 days). Vermont: Borrow It (30-day loans). Maine: AT4Maine (30-day loans). These focus on assistive technology and may not stock basic wheelchairs or walkers.
- Call 211. Dial 2-1-1 or search the state 211 service for “loan closet,” “medical equipment loan,” or “durable medical equipment.”
- Ask your local Area Agency on Aging, senior center, or town office. Many closets are run quietly by a fire department, library, Lions or Rotary club, church, or town health council and are not advertised online.
- Ask the hospital or rehab discharge planner, home-care nurse, or therapist. They often know which local closet has stock.
- Nearby counties. Some programs lend to people outside their town. Use the county filter on the main page, then call to ask.
2. Ask about coverage before buying
Ask your doctor’s office and your insurer whether the item is covered, and which suppliers they use. Coverage rules differ by plan and by item.
3. If you need to buy or rent
Ask a local medical-equipment supplier or pharmacy, and ask about used or refurbished equipment, which some programs and nonprofits sell at reduced prices. Compare prices, return policies, and sizing help before you pay.
Reserved space: if affiliate links are ever added here, they will go in a separate, labeled section below this line, after the free options above, with the disclosure repeated next to them. Nothing to show yet.
